About Us

Our Story

From Founder Christy Thompson, CPA

In 2009, I had just left public accounting and was working as a financial analyst at a large manufacturing company in Columbus, Ohio. I had recently started my family and was looking for more flexibility in my schedule, and I knew I had a passion for working with small business owners. I started taking on bookkeeping and accounting work, as well as tax preparation. My business began as Christy Johnson CPA, and it was a small side gig for about 2 years. After the birth of my second child, I started looking for part-time options in my field. Unfortunately, the options seemed to be nonexistent for parents that wanted part-time, meaningful work while still having the flexibility to raise a family, so I decided to quit my full-time job and focus on growing my small business. I quickly connected with a small number of wonderful business owners that understood my passion and were more than willing to accommodate my unusual schedule. A few clients even allowed me to bring my newborn daughter to their houses while I reconciled their books each month.

In 2018, I decided to focus on bookkeeping and accounting services only, and stopped preparing taxes. I also rebranded to Balance Ohio. In the years since then, we have grown the team and our client base to include nonprofit organizations, construction companies, attorneys, retail and many other industries. In 2025, we started taking on payroll clients after realizing this was a need in the market.

I have always had a passion for small business owners, so even though the business has grown and the firm has some large clients, I still enjoy working with the solopreneurs and gig workers just starting out. Our team goes beyond a typical accounting firm by giving advice to new business owners that know their industry but are new to running a business.

As the founder of Balance Ohio, I have maintained my primary philosophy of providing a work environment that allows employees the flexibility to work part time, but still make their work meaningful. We provide paid time off to part time employees, flexible work schedules, and the ability to work remotely. While this idea was initially rooted in my journey of becoming a parent, we recognize that everyone, regardless of their individual situation, appreciates the ability to have a flexible work schedule, and therefore this opportunity is offered to all employees at Balance Ohio.
